Seven classic Chiefs games (before Patrick Mahomes) to stream free on NFL Game Pass
We all have more down time than usual, and when that will change is anyone’s guess right now.
With the coronavirus pandemic causing nearly every sport in the world to shut down, the NFL has made its Game Pass available for free.
Fans can watch any game from 2009 to 2019, and there are options: full replay, condensed, coaches film or audio only.
That means every game from the Chiefs’ 2019 Super Bowl season, including the playoffs, is available. Or fans could re-watch Patrick Mahomes’ fantastic first season as a starter.
But I’ve picked seven games that Chiefs fans might want to check out from the Before Mahomes Era (BME), and there is a link to each condensed game.
Chiefs 23, Chargers 20, OT
The game at Arrowhead Stadium was tied at 20 late in the fourth quarter but the Chargers were driving for a winning score, threatening to ruin Halloween for Kansas City fans. Fortunately, Philip Rivers fumbled a snap and Chiefs linebacker Andy Studebaker recovered in the waning seconds. In overtime, Ryan Succop made a 30-yard field goal to win it.
Chiefs 56, Raiders 31
Jamaal Charles had a 1-yard scoring run and four touchdown receptions (49 yards, 39 yards, 16 yards and 71 yards) as the Chiefs crushed the Raiders in Oakland and clinched a playoff berth. The Chiefs opened fast: Quintin Demps had a long kickoff return and Charles took a short pass from Alex Smith 49 yards to the house. It was all downhill for the Raiders after that.
Chiefs 41, Patriots 14
This had to be the worst game of Tom Brady’s career in New England as he was benched after throwing for just 159 yards with a pair of interceptions. The Chiefs scored the game’s first 27 points, likely hurting the “Monday Night Football” viewership. Speaking of ratings, Chiefs fans set the record for the loudest stadium that night and all Patriots coach Bill Belichick would say is “We’re on to Cincinnati.”
Chiefs 33, Chargers 27, OT
Arrowhead Stadium was quiet as San Diego jumped to a 24-3 lead midway through the third quarter. But the Chiefs roared back and forced overtime. After winning the toss, the Chiefs drove 70 yards for the winning touchdown on Smith’s run. He was just a touch excited after the game.
Chiefs 30, Broncos 27, OT
The Chiefs got a safety and Tyreek Hill took the ensuring free kick back 86 yards for a touchdown and seemed to be on their way in the first half. But Denver scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns and were on the cusp of victory before Smith threw a touchdown pass and two-point conversion that tied the game in the final minute. In OT, both teams kicked field goals, and the Chiefs won it on Cairo Santos’ 34-yard kick ... off the upright for the win on “Sunday Night Football” in Denver.
Chiefs 29, Falcons 28
This game had a little bit of everything, notably Eric Berry’s Pick-6 and Pick-2 that won the game in stunning fashion. Atlanta scored to go ahead and was hoping to get a field-goal lead. Instead, Berry won the game for KC. The Chiefs also ran a fantastic fake punt as Albert Wilson fooled the Falcons and scored on a 55-yard run.
Chiefs 42, Patriots 27
The Chiefs ruined New England’s party. The Patriots opened at home on Thursday night as the NFL season kicked off. They held a lead going into the fourth quarter, but the Chiefs outscored New England 21-0 and stunned the state of Massachusetts. Smith threw four touchdown passes.
