NFL Films raised a Chiefs flag at its headquarters in New Jersey. Here’s why.
You don’t have to drive far around Kansas City to see a Chiefs flag flying outside a home.
Chiefs fans may not realize this, but there is also one flying high in Mount Laurel Township, New Jersey, but it doesn’t belong to a Kansas City fan. It’s outside the NFL Films headquarters.
NFL Network analyst Brian Baldinger tweeted a video of the Chiefs flag flying next to a U.S. flag and an NFL Films flag at the headquarters.
“Tradition has it that the team that wins the Super Bowl, their championship banner flies,” Baldinger said in the video. “So here, the Kansas City Chiefs for the first time in 50 years and the second time in their storied franchise history, the Kansas City Chiefs flag flies at NFL Films.”
This actually would be the first time the Chiefs flag is flying at NFL Films’ offices.
A story on the Patriots website said that before the 2011 season, NFL Films co-founder Steve Sabol wanted three flagpoles outside the headquarters, but only knew for certain that he’d want a U.S. flag and an NFL Films flag. Unsure what to fly on the third pole, Sabol asked his staff for ideas and it was suggested the flag of the reigning Super Bowl champion.
Films VP of Production Operations Jeremy Swarbrick told the Patriots website an employee who is a fan of the Super Bowl champion is picked to raise the team’s flag, “which remains there until just moments before the next regular season kicks off. It is then placed in storage and replaced by a flag commemorating Sabol, who died in September 2012.”
