For Pete's Sake

KU student typed his midterm paper in stands at Allen Fieldhouse during Jayhawks game

We’ve all had times in our life when we’ve faced tough decisions.

Take a new job or stay put? Purchase a home or continue renting? Go to the Kansas men’s basketball game or write a midterm paper?

OK, that last one isn’t a common problem, but KU student Jake Tatge faced that conundrum. However, he figured out how to have his cake and eat it, too.

“The moment you opened the midterm you had a 10-hour window to complete it,” Tatge wrote in a message. “I had set plans to go to the game last night, but I accidentally open the prompt for the midterm, thus beginning my 10-hour window. So now I had to miss the game, but then I realized, the KU website for AFH doesn’t specifically state I can’t bring a laptop inside.”

So Tage brought his laptop to Allen Fieldhouse on Wednesday night and worked on the paper while in the stands. One problem: the laptop wasn’t fully charged at tipoff.

It was fine, because Tatge got a good chunk of his European Politics midterm paper finished.

Tatge, who is a double major in political science and German language, said he works at Allen Fieldhouse.

“I texted my manager who said I couldn’t bring it in,” Tatge wrote, “but I did it anyway, and security let me in!”

Tatge, who is from Arvada, Colorado, said his deadline was actually 3 a.m., and he got the paper finished in time.

And he was on hand to see the Jayhawks clinch a share of the Big 12 championship with a 75-66 win.

He also tweeted (in German): “Homework and love for the Jayhawks.”
