Patrick Mahomes optimistic an extension will keep him with Chiefs ‘for a long time’

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has one year left on his rookie contract, but there’s no chance he’ll be playing somewhere else when his deal ends.

A contract extension is coming as owner Clark Hunt called it a priority days before the Chiefs won Super LIV. Big numbers have been thrown out when talking about Mahomes’ next deal with some speculating he could receive $40 million a year and a total deal in excess of $200 million.

Others have thought the contract could be as big as $44 million a year for Mahomes, who in two seasons as a starter has won an NFL MVP award and a Super Bowl MVP award.

However, Matt Verderame of FanSided spoke last week with Mahomes’ agent, Leigh Steinberg who said he wants to get “Mahomes what he deserves while ensuring Chiefs can maintain a good roster.”

Steinberg told Verderame: “Quarterback greatness is judged by Super Bowls.”

On Sunday, Mahomes spoke to SiriusXM NFL Radio about a potential contract extension. Mahomes believes it is coming soon.

“I’m optimistic just to be able to be a Kansas City Chief for a long time,” Mahomes said. “I think the best thing about this team and this organization is they handle things the right way and they do things the right way. So, for me, obviously I’m optimistic of getting that contract and extending my time in Kansas City. But I’m gonna just go about being who I am, just like I have since the beginning since I was the backup until now and that’s to go out there and love this game, treat people the right way and all that stuff handles itself.”

Mahomes also talked about working in the offseason on “injury prevention stuff.” He wants to be 100% ready and prepared to take on the rigors of a full NFL season.
