Former NFL defensive back sees Broncos’ Chris Harris Jr. as good fit for the Chiefs
Former Kansas cornerback Chris Harris Jr. is set to be a free agent in March and has said there is a chance he could return to Broncos, where he has played his entire nine-season career.
But Harris, 30, wants to return to the slot in Denver, which is no guarantee.
So if Harris leaves, one former NFL cornerback thinks he would be a good fit with a team closer to where he played college ball: the Chiefs.
DeAngelo Hall, who played 14 NFL seasons with Washington, Atlanta and Oakland, gave his thoughts on where potential free agents could play next season during a spot earlier this week on the NFL Network.
When Harris’ name came up, Hall said: “I’m going to have to go with the Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs. I keep him in the division. He knows that division very, very well. Anytime you don’t feel the love reciprocated, you want a little payback. So you want to see those guys twice a year.
“But you just think of the kind of player Chris Harris is. You saw what Tyrann Mathieu brought to that Kansas City defense. Chris Harris is the same type of player. He plays every level, whether it’s in the box, the nickel position, safety position, and he is a smart football player. You want to add as many smart football players as you can to the fold.”
With Chiefs defensive backs Kendall Fuller and Bashaud Breeland set to be free agents, Hall says Harris could fill a void if there is an opening in Kansas City.
“Chris Harris,” Hall said, “is a guy you can plug into a couple different places on that defense.”
The NFL Network tweeted that clip:
Harris, who has 20 interceptions and 23 tackles for loss in his career, liked that tweet and another from an ESPN writer who suggested the Chiefs as one of three potential landing spots for his services.
If that seems like tepid support for joining the Chiefs, Harris was asked directly if he would be open to joining the Chiefs while on “The Rich Eisen Show” last month.
“I’m listening to everybody. Kansas, I went to school there, so that’s like another home for me. A big following there,” Harris said. “I’m definitely looking at everybody but like you said, I mean, I don’t see why it wouldn’t be a good fit.”
