Chiefs’ Chris Jones reveals what he said that upset Patriots’ Tom Brady during game

One of the key steps in the Chiefs’ Super Bowl run came in December.

The Chiefs went to Gillette Stadium and beat the Patriots 23-16, and that win proved to be a tiebreaker for seeding in the AFC playoffs. The Chiefs got the No. 2 seed and the bye while New England ended up losing in a Wild Card game.

During that Chiefs victory, Patriots quarterback Tom Brady and KC defensive lineman Chris Jones were caught yelling at one another.

Earlier this week, Jones was a guest on the Pardon My Take podcast and talked about getting under Brady’s skin* (as well as soon-to-be former Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers).

*I have replaced a curse word with smack in the following quote below

“You gotta understand — I talk a lot of (smack) on the field,” Jones said on the show. “That’s the first time I’ve ever seen Tom Brady get mad at a defensive lineman, when I talked (smack) to him.”

Brady is 42 years old, and Rivers is 38, so the 25-year-old Jones didn’t hesitate to encourage those quarterbacks to call it a career.

“That’s part of the game, man,” Jones said. “You know, quarterbacks and D-line, those are two different types of class. So when you’re able to clash up, you talk your (smack). You say how you feel to him. If he on the ground, you call him an old-ass mother ... Or, ‘Get your old ass up.’ (Or), ‘You need to ... retire.’

“So any time I’m able to say anything to a quarterback after I hit him — I don’t even have to hit you. I’ll just come to you and talk (smack). After the game, it’s nothing but love and respect, but between those lines, we’re at war and whatever I can do to get under your skin, whatever I can do to affect you. But just understand it’s not just talking (smack), I’m going to hit you.”

Jones was asked if he had called Brady old and suggested maybe it was time to retire.

“I mean, along those words,” Jones said. “And Brady got up so ... fast, that’s the quickest I’ve ever seen Brady move.”

Jones declined to reveal how Brady responded when they were standing with their facemasks touching.

“Brady is a good guy,” Jones said. “He cussed me out, but I loved it. But that’s the first time I’ve ever seen Brady cuss a D-lineman out. So obviously I was doing something right.”

You can listen to the podcast here, but be aware that there is quite a bit of cursing.

Jones also said he 1,000% believes he is the best interior lineman in the NFL and was upset at one point during the season that he wasn’t getting double-teamed more often during games.
