For Pete's Sake

Here are the Super Bowl records the Chiefs set or tied in win over 49ers

And to think, there was a point in November when NFL observers thought the Chiefs would be passed by the Raiders atop the AFC West.

Instead, the Chiefs ripped off nine straight victories, capped by Sunday night’s 31-20 win over the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LIV at Hard Rock Stadium.

The Chiefs set these Super Bowl records on Sunday night, the team said:

At 24 years, 138 days old, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is the youngest quarterback to be named a Super Bowl MVP. The previous youngest was Emmitt Smith at 24 years, 233 days.

The Chiefs’ two Super Bowl victories are a record 50 years apart. (The Super Bowl IV on Jan. 11, 1970, officially 50 years, 22 days before Sunday’s win).

Here are records that were tied by the Chiefs, the team said:

Most touchdowns in one quarter: 2, Damien Williams

Most points in the fourth quarter: 21

Most fourth-down conversions by a team in a game: 2

Fewest fumbles lost by both teams in a game: Zero (Chiefs and 49ers)

Here are other notes about playoffs and the Super Bowl:

The Chiefs are the first team in NFL history to win three games after trailing by 10 or more points in a single postseason.

The rally from a 20-10 deficit down matched the second-biggest comeback in Super Bowl history. The Patriots’ 25-point comeback in Super Bowl LI is the biggest while Sunday’s game was one of four 10-point comeback wins.

Mahomes is the second-youngest quarterback to win a Super Bowl (Ben Roethlisberger was 23 years, 320 days when the Steelers won Super Bowl XL).

With two touchdown passes, Mahomes is the fifth quarterback to throw 10 or more TD passes in a single postseason. He is the youngest to to do so. The others were Joe Montana (1989), Kurt Warner (2008) and Joe Flacco (2012) who all had 11; and Tom Brady (2014) who had 10.

Mahomes’ career record as a starter is now 28-8.
