Eleven of the Chiefs’ most entertaining plays from the 2019 season
Chiefs fans hope the fun isn’t over just yet.
The 2019 season will wrap up Sunday with Super Bowl LIV at Hard Rock Stadium when the Chiefs take on the San Francisco 49ers. There has been no shortage of memories made over the last five months, and maybe more are to come.
Here are 11 of the most entertaining plays from the season:
11. Heads-up
Don’t stop until you hear the whistle. That lesson is taught starting in pee-wee football, but there are times when NFL players think a play is over and then something amazing happens. That was the case with a 100-yard fumble return by cornerback Bashaud Breeland against the Lions:
10. Take it back
The Chargers had just pulled ahead in the season finale, but Mecole Hardman returned this kickoff 104 yards to give the Chiefs a lead for good. Hardman then extended the fun by celebrating with the fans:
9. Frank Clark’s run
Defensive lineman Frank Clark had three sacks in the Chiefs’ 51-31 win over the Texans in an AFC Divisional Playoff game at Arrowhead Stadium. The last one was amazing as Clark ran 42.2 yards while chasing Houston’s Deshaun Watson, to the delight of the home crowd:
8. Hook and lateral
Unscripted plays are fun, and the Chiefs pulled off this one against the Lions. Travis Kelce caught a pass and flipped it back to LeSean McCoy. It’s the kind of thing you’d see late in desperation time of a game, but this happened early in the fourth quarter:
7. Fast start
The Chiefs needed all of 96 seconds to score their first touchdown of the 2019 season at Jacksonville. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes threw a short pass to Sammy Watkins who left the Jaguars in his dust:
6. Jump to it
The Chiefs lost their first game after Mahomes returned from a dislocated kneecap, but the game included this gem. Fans worried about Mahomes’ knee had to breathe a little easier when he delivered a jump pass to Hardman, who then smoked a pair of Titans defenders en route to the end zone:
5. Two points, two angels
The Chiefs beat the Broncos in a snowstorm at Arrowhead Stadium, and Mahomes showed off nearly all of the five basics of “Dodgeball” on a two-point conversion: dodge, duck, dip, dive and dodge before tossing the ball to Watkins. As part of his celebration, Watkins made a snow angel and Hill joined him:
4. Game of inches
The Chiefs erased a 24-point deficit in less than a quarter in the AFC Divisional playoff win against Houston. The final touchdown before halftime was inch perfect as Mahomes somehow didn’t cross the line of scrimmage, somehow spotted Kelce with six Texans defenders in the area and somehow threw the ball to his right while running left. Arrowhead Stadium, which had been quiet, erupted as the Chiefs took a 28-24 lead and never trailed again:
3. Cheetah fast
Hill reminded everyone he’s the fastest man in the NFL ... on a touchdown by teammate Damien Williams. After breaking free from the Vikings defense on what would be a 91-yard touchdown run, Williams was caught by one person:
2. Kevin Harlan and FitzMagic
The Chiefs seemed destined to miss out on a first-round bye in the playoffs because they needed Miami to beat New England in the season finale at Foxborough, Massachusetts. But when the Patriots scored a late touchdown, all hope seemed lost. But Dolphins quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick threw a touchdown pass that won the game just after the Chiefs were kicking an extra point. Harlan’s call went like this: “Butker kicks the extra point ... and Fitzpatrick throws in the end zone. Touchdown Miami!”
1. The Run
The Chiefs trailed for most of the first half of the AFC Championship Game but when they went ahead for the first time, it was an electric moment. Mahomes took a snap from the Titans’ 27-yard line with 23 seconds to play in the first half. Twelve seconds later he was in the end zone with perhaps the greatest play in franchise history:
