For Pete's Sake

‘The guy’s awesome.’ 49ers’ Jimmy Garoppolo recalls simple gesture by Patrick Mahomes

San Francisco quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo has bad memories of the last time the 49ers played the Chiefs.

It wasn’t just that the Chiefs won 38-27 at Arrowhead Stadium on Sept. 23, 2018. Garoppolo torn an ACL and ended up missing the final 13 games of the season.

After the game, Garoppolo was being taken out of the stadium in a cart when Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes came over to offer his support. You can see the moment in the video above.

The two will face off in Super Bowl LIV, and Garoppolo was asked Thursday by reporters in San Francisco if that simple gesture had made an impression.

“Absolutely. I didn’t even know Pat at the time,” Garoppolo said. “For him to come out of his way after the game and wish me luck and everything, just a real class act. The guy’s awesome. On the field, off the field, he does it all.”

This wasn’t the beginning of a lifelong friendship, as the two haven’t spoken since that day.

“Not really since then, no, but just for him to do something as simple as that,” Garoppolo said, “it went along way.”
