49ers’ Dee Ford on facing Chiefs in Super Bowl: ‘Everything’s special about it’

Were it not for linebacker Dee Ford lining up offsides in last year’s AFC Championship Game, the Chiefs’ Super Bowl drought would have ended at 49 seasons.

Ford wasn’t solely to blame for the 37-31 overtime loss to the Patriots last year, but his miscue on what would have been a game-sealing interception was the moment many Chiefs fans remember. Heck, Chiefs CEO/Chairman indirectly mentioned it on Sunday.

The Chiefs traded Ford to the San Francisco 49ers last year and, wouldn’t you know it, his first time playing against Kansas City will be in Super Bowl LIV on Feb. 2.

Ford was excited about the opportunity to see the Chiefs.

“Everything’s special about it,” Ford told NBC Sports Bay Area after the NFC Championship Game on Sunday. “The best of the best. I’ve got some old brothers out there. There’s going to be a lot of love like old times. And they already know I’m coming and I already know they coming, so it’s going to be a great battle.”

Ford holds no hard feelings toward the Chiefs, who selected him in the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft. He played his first six seasons in Kansas City, so he believes the Chiefs will be glad to see him as well.

“Let’s get this right: There’s no love lost nowhere,” Ford told USA Today. “It’s just me playing my brothers. At the end of the day, we just have to compete. But I’ve got so much love for the people in that building. And likewise, they’ve got love for me.”
