This MLB/’Mean Girls’ mash-up video hilariously sums up the league’s wild week
Has there ever been a week like this in Major League Baseball’s history?
On Monday, commissioner Rob Manfred announced the Astros would be punished for a cheating scandal during the 2017 season. Shortly after that, Astros owner Jim Crane fired general manager Jeff Luhnow and manager A.J. Hinch.
In the days that followed, manager Alex Cora and the Red Sox agreed to part ways and manager Carlos Beltran was out as Mets manager as part of the cheating scandal fallout.
Then things really got wild.
Twitter sleuths believe they uncovered a burner account Beltran was using and that Beltran’s niece was saying on Twitter that Astros players wore buzzers that told them when a certain pitch was coming. It was later determined that it wasn’t actually Beltran’s niece. Nevertheless, Reds pitcher Trevor Bauer said he’d heard the rumor about the buzzer. Oh, and Bauer has been roasting the Astros on Twitter this week, too.
One Jose Altuve interview with Fox Sports’ Ken Rosenthal was carefully studied for clues about a buzzer.
ESPN’s Jessica Mendoza, who also works for the Mets, blamed the whole Astros mess on former Houston pitcher Mike Fiers, who told The Athletic details of the cheating.
Former Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira called for Carlos Beltran’s firing, the Dodgers’ Alex Wood and Cody Bellinger spoke out on Twitter, and oh by the way, there were unsubstantiated accusations that Angels star Mike Trout used HGH.
Whew.
An intrepid Twitter user named Julia managed to sum up all of this (and more) in a very funny “Mean Girls” mash-up:
