These were seven of Chiefs’ most electrifying plays from the 2019 season
While discussing the most exciting plays from the Chiefs season, The Star’s reporters were surprised at how few of the plays included quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
That’s not a knock on Mahomes, who had another great season. Rather, it was a nod to the defense, which has three plays on this top-seven list from 2019. Could you have said that a year ago?
Here are the plays picked by The Star in chronological order:
1. The NFL is celebrating its 100th season, but the Chiefs rejoiced over a different hundred: A 100-yard fumble return by cornerback Bashaud Breeland against the Lions on Sept. 29. In the third quarter, Detroit was poised to take the lead, but Kerryon Johnson fumbled and Breeland ran 100 yards in the other direction:
2. The offense also flashed some razzle dazzle in that 34-30 win over the Lions. Travis Kelce caught a pass and decided on the spot to lateral to LeSean McCoy. It wasn’t a touchdown, but NFL fans everywhere thought it was a cool moment, including Fox Sports’ Kevin Burkhardt, who called it a “Barnum and Bailey moment from the Kansas City Chiefs:”
3. The Chiefs trailed the Vikings by six points in the third quarter and had the ball on their own 9-yard line. Facing second and 4, running back Damien Williams burst through the Minnesota defense on a 91-yard touchdown run that gave the Chiefs the lead as the crowd at Arrowhead Stadium went nuts. What made this play even better was Tyreek Hill’s burst to catch Williams:
4. In his first game back following a dislocated kneecap, Mahomes delivered another “How’d he do that” moment with a jump pass to rookie receiver Mecole Hardman. Hardman left a pair of Tennessee Titans defenders in his wake on the touchdown play:
5. The Chiefs held a seven-point lead on the Chargers, who were in the red zone with fewer than 30 seconds to play during a Monday Night Football game in Mexico City. The Chargers’ hopes of a comeback ended on Daniel Sorensen’s interception of Philip Rivers to seal the victory:
6. In a rematch of the AFC Championship game, the Patriots were down by seven points and faced fourth-and-3 from the Chiefs’ 5. Quarterback Tom Brady’s pass to Julian Edelman was knocked down by Breeland on a perfectly timed play:
7. Trailing the Chargers by four points early in the second half of the season finale at Arrowhead Stadium, Hardman took the momentum back for the Chiefs with a 104-yard kickoff return for a touchdown:
