After carving up the Texans, Broncos’ Drew Lock tamps down talk of Chiefs game
Here’s a stat to keep in mind with the Broncos coming to Arrowhead Stadium on Dec. 15: Denver quarterback Drew Lock has a 136.0 quarterback rating in road games.
OK, he’s played in just one road game, but what a game it was.
Lock, the former Lee’s Summit High School and Mizzou star, completed 22 of 27 passes for 309 yards, three touchdowns and one interception Sunday in a 38-24 win over the Texans in Houston.
“We were ready to rock and roll from the get-go,” Lock told reporters. “We were fired up, we were ready to go. It was exciting to be a part of and we played all right today.”
The Broncos have a 5-8 record, but they are 2-0 in in games started by Lock, who was the Broncos’ second-round pick in this year’s draft.
After a thumb injury caused him to spend most of the season on injured reserve, Lock returned and made his NFL debut in a win over the Chargers a week ago.
Lock looked even better Sunday as the Broncos rolled to a 38-3 lead. The Texans scored three touchdowns in the final quarter and a half to make the game seem closer than it was.
The first of Lock’s touchdowns Sunday was a 14-yard pass to Noah Fant:
The second was an 8-yard pass to Jeff Heuerman:
Lock’s third touchdown was to Royce Freeman:
If you’re wondering about Lock’s celebration, it’s inspired by Buzz Lightyear of “Toy Story.” His teammates had poked fun about the playsheet on his forearm.
“It was definitely a little fun with the Buzz Lightyear this week,” Lock said. “It blew up on Twitter and whatnot, to where the offensive line was like we should shoot the laser when you score a touchdown. I said, ‘Alright, if you want to do it, I’ll do it.’ We fully embraced it.”
Up next for Lock, 23, is a game against the Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium, which is not far from his childhood home.
“I think it’ll be blown up that I’m going back home, going to Kansas City,” Lock said. “But if you think about it, that’s my home, I’ve been there a thousand times, nothing new about it except for I’m going to be blue and orange and not red and yellow, so it’ll be a little different.
“I’ve got to keep it day by day ... not get too far ahead of ourselves. We had an awesome game today, but that was because of the prep we had this week.
“We can’t slack off this week going into this Chiefs game.”
