Chiefs saw the good and bad of pass-interference reviews against Raiders

The pass-interference review giveth and it taketh away.

That’s what the Chiefs learned during Sunday’s game against the Raiders at Arrowhead Stadium.

In the first quarter, Patrick Mahomes’ pass to Sammy Watkins in the end zone fell incomplete, but Chiefs coach Andy Reid thought pass interference should have been called. Reid threw the challenge flag, but the officials declined to call it a penalty.

While the play was being reviewed, Tony Romo, who was part of the CBS broadcast team, thought the officials would see that it was pass interference on Raiders safety Lamarcus Joyner. Romo was wrong in this case.

But a review worked in the Chiefs’ favor in the third quarter when the Raiders intercepted a pass in the end zone. Because every turnover is reviewed, the officials noted that Oakland cornerback Trayvon Mullen should have been called for pass interference.

That negated the interception and gave the Chiefs a first down at the 3-yard line. Here is that play:
