NFL Network analyst gives Rams edge over Chiefs based on the quarterbacks

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes took the NFL by storm in the first half of the season. The mania, however, has cooled a bit.

Saints quarterback Drew Brees is now favored by some to win the MVP award, and at least one NFL Network thinks Rams quarterback Jared Goff gives Los Angeles the edge in Monday’s game against the Chiefs.

James Jones, the former Packers receiver, on Tuesday night broke down which team had the edge in the Chiefs-Rams game, based on five areas: coaching, defense, receivers/tight ends, running backs and quarterbacks. Elliot Harrison was on the segment with Jones, and they agreed that the Chiefs and Rams each were favored in two categories.

The tie-breaker: quarterbacks.

Mahomes and Goff are the top two in the NFL in passing yards. Mahomes has completed 67 percent of his passes for a league-best 3,150 yards and 31 touchdowns. Goff’s numbers: 68.4 completion percentage, 3,134 yards and 22 touchdowns.

Jones said: “Patrick Mahomes likes to hold on to the ball a little and take those deep shots down the field. You can’t do that with 99 (Aaron Donald) coming after you though. I am giving this one to Jared Goff, and listen, the Rams will win this ballgame at the crib. They win, but it’ll be a good one.”

Harrison said: “I think Andy Reid will adjust to the pressure up the middle and roll Mahomes out .... and that secondary has been giving up a lot of plays. I’m taking Patrick Mahomes in this matchup.”

Here is their breakdown of the game:
