For Pete's Sake

Here’s an idea for what to do if Chiefs-Rams game has to be moved from Mexico City

Update (4 p.m.): The NFL has decided to move the Chiefs-Rams game to LA.

Original story: The NFL has a mess on its hand, and I’m not just talking about the field at Azteca Stadium in Mexico City.

That’s the site of the Monday night game between the Chiefs and the Rams, but the condition of the field is so poor that the NFL is weighing its options about whether to move the game to Los Angeles.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that one option is to postpone the game, and that’s likely because the Chiefs and Rams have a bye week after their scheduled Monday contest.

But a few people are floating a new idea: move the game to Los Angeles and give proceeds to those who have been affected by the devastating wildfires in California. That would include firefighters.

CBS Sports football analyst Amy Trask was among those advocating for this, and she suggested that fans also bring clothes and other donations for those in need:

Other fans have suggested this, too:

Trask expounded on what that would mean for fans in Mexico City, and she smacked down a dumb sexist remark:

If you’re wondering about moving a game on short notice, there is precedent. The NFL moved a San Diego Chargers-Miami Dolphins game in 2003 to Arizona on short notice because of wildfires.

And if you’re wondering about the status of the LA Coliseum, nothing is scheduled until Nov. 24 (USC vs. Notre Dame).

Sam Farmer of the Los Angeles Times reported that “NFL rules say the home team in the international series (in this case, the Rams) has to have its home stadium available in the event the game has to be moved, for whatever reason.”

Finally, if you haven’t seen recent images of the field in Mexico City, take a look at this video from Saturday:

Player safety is the buzz word Tuesday as images of Azteca Stadium are circulating:
