Broncos defensive lineman Derek Wolfe: ‘I really hate Kansas City’
Who knows? A break here or there and the Broncos could have swept the season series from the Chiefs.
Instead, Denver lost both games by a combined 11 points. The Chiefs won 27-23 on Oct. 1 in Denver and held off the Broncos on Sunday at home, winning 30-23.
Broncos defensive lineman Derek Wolfe was in particularly cranky mood following Sunday’s loss at Arrowhead Stadium.
“They beat us by a total of 10 points,” Wolfe told the Colorado Springs Gazette. “I’m tired of losing — especially to Kansas City. I really hate Kansas City. Really hate ‘em. I don’t like coming here. I don’t like anything about ‘em, except for Travis (Kelce). Travis is the only person I like over there. And I have to.”
Wolfe and Kelce were roommates at the University of Cincinnati.
Kelce was, um, touched by the shout-out. He tweeted: “Love you Derek.”
Wolfe also took issue with the officiating in Sunday’s game. He said Chiefs’ offensive linemen were more than 5 yards past the line of scrimmage on some pass plays.
“Five yards down the field, 6 yards down the field, they’re still trying to hold on to me,” Wolfe told the Denver Post. “I’m wondering when they were going to call the penalty.
“How is that OK? It’s a rule in the game of football that you can’t have a (lineman) downfield. I guess the rules are changing.”
One final gripe from Wolfe: the touchdown pass from Patrick Mahomes to Kareem Hunt. One a fourth-and-1 play in the third quarter, Hunt took a shovel pass, bulled through would-be tackles and jumped a defender en route to the end zone.
But Wolfe said the Chiefs’ Andrew Wylie moved before the snap.
“The offensive guard jumped offside,” Wolfe told the Post. “I went to stand up thinking they were calling to call it and boom, the ball is snapped.”
In the end, Wolfe was lamenting the loss.
“All that matters is wins in this league,” Wolfe said on the Broncos’ website. “This is a production league. If you’re not winning, then it don’t matter what you did. If you lose, it don’t matter how good you played.”
Denver fell to 3-5 on the season.
