‘Chiefs are a true Super Bowl contender.’ Here’s the buzz about KC after Sunday’s win
Sunday nights have been known to unite people from coast to coast in one common dreadful thought:
“Dang, I have to go back to work tomorrow.”
But for Chiefs fans, Sunday night was a blast. Playing in front of a national television audience, the Chiefs rolled over the Bengals 45-10 at Arrowhead Stadium.
There were big plays and singing and dancing.
The Chiefs’ lopsided victory may not have been the most entertaining TV viewing, but people were certainly buzzing about Kansas City.
Here is a sample of what people were saying:
Connor Orr of Sports Illustrated wrote a story for Monday Morning Quarterback. The headline: “The Chiefs are saving the NFL’s 2018 season.”
Here is a sample of what Orr wrote: “Maybe Kansas City doesn’t realize that not every team can score points in Costco-sized bundles like they can. Or maybe they do realize the undeniable truth about the 2018 season: The NFL needs the Kansas City Chiefs. They are the greatest show in town for myriad reasons, and without them, we would still be wondering aloud if football was in a downward spiral. Watching them produces the same kind of visceral reaction one has to pummeling an opponent in Madden on rookie mode. The game is stretched to its outer limits merely for our entertainment. Most anything is possible. ...
“It is now both accepted and expected that an NFL head coach look at the best offenses happening throughout all levels of football and find a way to incorporate them, instead of explaining away why it wouldn’t work in our league.
“While the health of the game has been steadily improving, the Chiefs represented the monumental shove. The star power. The panache. The ingenuity. The thing that forces long-checked out channel flippers to become obsessed again.”
Former Notre Dame and Kansas football coach wondered if Mahomes has the MVP award wrapped up.
“No one has excited the NFL like this guy has,” Weis said on Sirius XM.
Mark Maske of the Washington Post wrote an analysis with the headline, “If the Chiefs can play any defense at all, they’re next to impossible to beat.”
This is a sample of what he wrote: “It was a very good defensive performance by the Chiefs. With their offense, that’s far more than what is required. Anything better than completely dreadful is probably good enough for the Chiefs to win.
“Mahomes looked, once again, like the league’s MVP. He connected on 28 of 39 passes for 358 yards and four touchdowns. He became the youngest passer in league history to post six straight 300-yard games. ...
“The Chiefs clearly don’t fear the Patriots. They won the season-opening game in New England last season. They scored practically at will against the Patriots last week. Mahomes is the NFL’s newest megastar, and the Chiefs are a true Super Bowl contender.
“And if they play defense like they did against the Bengals, they are very likely to be the AFC’s Super Bowl representative.”
Nick Wright of Fox Sports said the Chiefs are better than the undefeated Rams:
Brent Sobleski of Bleacher Report wrote a story with the headline, “It’s not just Patrick Mahomes; the Chiefs are a bona fide juggernaut.”
Here is a sample of what he wrote: “Patrick Mahomes’ star continues to shine so bright others are being lost in the glare. The Kansas City Chiefs are far more than their trendsetting quarterback, though.
“Yes, Mahomes is spectacular, and his skill set elevates the play of those around him, but the Chiefs roster is littered with standouts at every level deserving of far more attention.
“Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce are exceptional talents and two of the best at their respective positions. Hill may be the NFL’s fastest man and is nearly uncoverable. Kelce, meanwhile, can make a strong argument he surpassed the New England Patriots’ Rob Gronkowski as TE1.”
Sobieski wrote about Kareem Hunt, Mitchell Schwartz, Chris Jones and a host of other Chiefs. You can read more here.
Evan Grant, who writes about baseball for the Dallas Morning News, was clearly watching Sunday’s game:
