For Pete's Sake

Oakland A’s are sending gifts to fan who had beer thrown on him at Yankee Stadium

The bizarre part about this tweet is the apparent pride the Yankees fan takes in the actions in the video.

During Wednesday night’s American League Wild Card Game, which the Yankees won 7-2 over Oakland at Yankee Stadium, fans in the bleachers were cheering when a New York fan decided to throw his beer at an unsuspecting A’s fan.

A few thoughts:

1. Um, why?

2. This is the kind of thing that makes other fans dislike the Yankees.

2. Why waste a perfectly good beer doing something stupid?

Alas we may never know. But there is the incident and be aware that there is swearing in the video:

The A’s saw the video and want to help the poor Oakland fan. The team tweeted: “Do you know this A’s fan? We’d like to find him, hook him up with some new Oakland A’s gear that doesn’t smell like beer. Much love from Hero-Town, buddy.”

UPDATE: There is reason to believe in humanity once again.

The Athletics found the fan in question. His name is John Spencer:

And, other Yankees fans were quick to apologize for the boorish behavior of one of their own.

Another A’s fan offered to give Spencer an autograph of one of his favorite A’s players:
