The number of donations from Chiefs fans to the Alex Smith Foundation has slowed from the initial surge on Thursday, but the updated tally is impressive.
Fans wanting to say thank you to Smith for his five-year tenure with the Chiefs have given $60,000 from 2,900 donations, according to Pam Smith, Alex’s mother. Many of those donations were in the amount of $11, which was Smith’s jersey number.
“We are so appreciative,” Pam Smith wrote in an email to The Star.
The Chiefs have a trade in place with Washington, and will send Alex Smith to the NFC East team in exchange for a third-round pick in this year’s draft and cornerback Kendall Fuller. The trade will be completed the first day of the new league year, which begins at 3 p.m. on March 14.
