‘Heartbreak number one is in the books.’ Royals fans bid farewell to Lorenzo Cain
In less than three weeks, the Royals will open their spring-training camp in Surprise, Ariz., and fans knew that some familiar faces would be not be there.
But, still, there was that faint glimmer of hope that free agents Lorenzo Cain, Eric Hosmer and Mike Moustakas would unexpectedly return to the Royals. All three were key components of the 2015 World Series champions, and maybe a miracle would happen.
Alas, those hopes were officially dashed when Cain agreed to a contract with the Milwaukee Brewers on Thursday night.
Cain reportedly is getting a five-year, $80 million contract from the Brewers, the team that originally drafted him.
Royals fans said thank you and bid farewell to Cain with messages on social media:

Sad to see Lorenzo Cain leave the Royals, but he's back where he started with the Brew crew, will always be part of taking the crown

I didn't expect him to return to KC, and it's better for KC long term to get the pick and rebuild, but still. Damn. Will v much miss LoCain.

So long, Lorenzo Cain. Thanks for your hard work, the memories...and the championship. You may be a Brewer now (again) but you're also #ForeverRoyal

Heartbreak number one is in the books. This one will be easy compared to what's to come. I hate free agency. #Royals #LoCain #CainTrain https://t.co/S40QQxl7kC

I will always love Lorenzo Cain...that kid had a solar smile and was electric, so smooth on the field. Scoring from 1st on @JoeyBats19 and that 2B in the gap are memories that will jumpstart my heart faster than a defibrillator. Thanks LoCain #Royals
