Nearly half of Twins fans in poll would rather miss playoffs than face Yankees

When the Herm Edwards meme comes out, you know something odd has happened.

Edwards’ famous “You play to win the game” quote was one of the responses to a Twitter poll from Fox 9 Sports in Minnesota. The network asked: “After watching this series in NY would you rather play the Yankees again or miss the playoffs entirely?”

Wait, what?

The poll was posted after the Yankees swept a three-game series against the Twins in New York by a combined score of 18-6. The Yankees are leading the wild-card race and the Twins have the second spot, so they are on target to meet in the elimination game.*

*Unless something incredible happens for the Royals. Or the Angels. Or the Rangers. It’s a crazy race

Given the dreadful series, Fox 9 put the poll on Twitter and the results were a lot closer than you would expect since more than 2,000 people voted. “Yes play the Yankees again” received 53 percent of the vote, while “No miss the playoffs” got 47 percent.

Keep in mind that it’s not a scientific poll. Still, that 47 percent should be zero percent, so there are fans who don’t want to bother with the playoffs for a team that lost 103 games last year.

Here is the poll:

The 53 percent was a vocal majority, and many let Fox 9 know they were displeased with the poll, and that’s where the Edwards meme made an appearance:

At least one brave soul shared the reasoning for voting no.
