There are two things to note in Julian Marquez biography at Sherdog.com.

First, his nickname is “The Cuban Missile Crisis,” which is just plain awesome. Second, he’s from Kansas City.

Well, the Kansas City native sent waves through the mixed-martial arts scene when he competed in “Dana White’s Tuesday Night Contender Series” in Las Vegas. Marquez, 27, took out Phil Hawes with a devastating kick to the head.

This being MMA, please note it’s not for the squeamish.

“I just knew that he was just going to keep going and going that if I would have given it a second and weather the storm he’d leave an opening, which he did,” Marquez told UFC reporter Laura Sanko after the fight.

The knockout earned Marquez a four-fight contract with UFC.
