The New York Times has posted a map of college football fans based on Facebook “likes.”

As you might expect, Alabama had the highest concentration of fans, with 34 percent of Facebook users in the state who say they like the sport.

Second through fifth saturate our region: Nebraska, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Iowa.

The biggest surprises to me: Florida at No. 21 and Texas at No. 23. The states have plenty of pro sports teams, and high school football is huge in both places. But Texas has 12 major college football programs, the most of any state. Florida has seven.

But in terms of caring about the sport with a Facebook vote, Kansas has a greater percentage than both.

You can click on the map for county-by-county data. Jackson County, Mo., checks in at 13 percent, Johnson County, Kan., at 15 percent.
