The Star’s All-Big 12 and All-SEC men’s basketball teams
The Star’s All-Big 12 men’s basketball team spread the wealth among its top finishers.
On The Star’s All-Southeastern Conference team, regular-season champion and undefeated Kentucky dominated.
One member of each of the top five finishers made the Big 12’s honor team, led by player of the year Buddy Hield, the Oklahoma guard and league’s top scorer, who capped the regular season with a game-winning putback that beat Kansas 75-73 on Saturday.
Hield soared and got both hands on Jordan Woodard’s missed layup with less than 1 second remaining. He leads the league in scoring at 17.4 points, and that number increases to 18.6 in conference games.
League champion Kansas is represented by forward Perry Ellis .
Texas center Myles Turner, the Longhorns’ second-leading scorer at 10.8 points per game and the league’s top shot-blocker at 2.8, is the choice for freshman of the year.
In the SEC, the top honors didn’t go to big scorers. That’s because top-ranked Kentucky, which improved to 31-0 with Saturday’s victory over Florida, spreads the wealth among its talented roster.
Willie Cauley-Stein, the junior frontliner who spent his final two high school years at Olathe Northwest, is the player of the year. Cauley-Stein averaged 8.9 points, 6.4 rebounds, 1.6 blocks and shot 59.1 percent from the floor. He’s become a veteran leader on the nation’s most dominant team.
Wildcats frontliner Karl-Anthony Towns is the freshman of the year. Towns averages 9.7 points, a team-best 6.6 rebounds and 2.4 blocks. He plays an average of 20.7 minutes per game.
Look at the top of the standings to find The Star’s Big 12 and SEC coaches of the year: Kansas’ Bill Self and Kentucky’s John Calipari.
Self steered the Jayhawks to their 11th straight conference title, and Calipari is on a quest to coach college basketball’s first undefeated team since Indiana in 1976. If that happens, the Wildcats will finish 40-0.
