Sporting KC honors slain KCK police Capt. Robert Melton with jersey badge, moment of silence
A day after Children’s Mercy Park hosted the funeral for Kansas City, Kan., police Capt. Robert Melton, who was fatally shot Tuesday in the line of duty, a moment of silence at the venue honored him.
Before Sporting Kansas City played host to the Seattle Sounders FC on Sunday afternoon, the club placed Melton’s photo on its video boards in front of a hushed crowd.
To honor Melton, 46, who was shot and killed after joining officers who were pursuing men linked to a drive-by shooting, the Sporting players wore jerseys with the image of KCK police badge with a black-and-blue band on it.
Sporting also announced it would donate 40 percent of the proceeds from its 4-3-3 game-day raffle to the Captain Robert D. Melton Memorial Fund.
