Sporting Kansas City utilized its surplus of left outside fullbacks Tuesday, when it dealt former first-round pick Amadou Dia to Montreal in exchange for forward Cameron Porter.

Porter, 23, has not appeared in an MLS match this season after suffering a torn ACL last summer, his rookie year.

“Cameron is a player who we feel has a lot of upside,” Sporting Kansas City coach Peter Vermes said. “He can play multiple positions in the attack, and it will be good to have another young player to develop.”

Dia,a first-round pick in 2015, started the first nine games for Sporting KC this season, but he has appeared in only one match since April 27 and none since May 11. He became expendable with the recent emergence of left outside back Jimmy Medranda, who has started nine straight matches. Sporting KC also added left defender Ever Alvarado to its roster earlier this month, and it still has veteran Seth Sinovic on the depth chart at the same position.

Sporting KC seeks to bolster its attack with Porter, who played in five matches during his rookie season before the knee injury. That included two MLS matches and three appearances in the CONCACAF Champions League, during which he scored a late equalizing goal against Mexican-club CF Pachuca to send the Impact to the semifinals of the competition.

Porter was the 45th overall pick in the 2015 MLS SuperDraft after scoring 31 goals in his stint at Princeton. He has played the last three games for Montreal’s USL team.
