Former Kansas City Wizards coach Bob Gansler recovering after stroke

Former Kansas City Wizards coach Bob Gansler is recovering in a Milwaukee-area hospital after suffering a stroke Saturday morning.

Gansler, 73, was moved out of intensive care Sunday, according to a report in Wisconsin Soccer Central.

Gansler coached the Wizards from 1999-2006, amassing 95 victories. During his tenure, the Wizards won the 2000 MLS Cup and Supporters’ Shields trophies and the 2004 U.S. Open Cup.

He is a member of the U.S. Soccer Hall of Fame after coaching the United States men’s national team from 1989-91, which included an appearance at the 1990 World Cup, the country’s first qualification into the tournament in 40 years.

Gansler was inducted into the inaugural Sporting Legends class in 2013, along with midfielder Preki and goalkeeper Tony Meola.

“To be among the first batch, we can stand here and go all humble on you and all this sort of stuff, but it is nice when people remember what you did was worthwhile,” Gansler said after the October 2013 induction.

Gansler attended the 2015 MLS SuperDraft in Philadelphia earlier this month.
