Sporting KC expected to visit the White House in October

President Barack Obama spent the last two days in Kansas City, but his first meeting with the city’s championship soccer team — Sporting Kansas City — will come on his turf.

Sporting Kansas City is expected to visit the White House in October to celebrate its 2013 MLS Cup championship, according to a team spokesperson.

The date for the trip hasn’t been finalized, but Sporting KC travels to play D.C. United on Oct. 3. A day at the White House would likely precede the match.

It would mark the franchise’s first celebration at the President’s residence. The Kansas City Wizards won the MLS Cup in 2000, but their trip to the capital was canceled after the Sept. 11 attacks in 2001.
