Sporting KC signs defender Kevin Ellis to a new contract
Sporting Kansas City will embark on its 2015 season Monday when it officially opens training camp in Tuscon, Ariz. And it appears defender Kevin Ellis will be a part of the camp roster after all.
Three days after coach Peter Vermes said offseason contract negotiations with Ellis had failed to produce a new deal, Ellis announced via Twitter that he will be with the team in camp after signing a contract.
“It all starts tomorrow!” Ellis said on Twitter late Saturday. “(KC Cauldron), can’t wait to see and hear you guys in March!”
A graduate of Oak Park High School, Ellis became the club’s second homegrown player when he signed with Sporting KC in 2011. He enjoyed his best season as a professional in 2014, when he appeared in 20 MLS matches, including 16 starts.
He scored his first career goal during a CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinals match against Cruz Azul last March.
