Sporting Kansas City’s depth will be tested Saturday.

Already without captain Matt Besler, the club lost starters Brad Davis and Soni Mustivar to practice injuries this week, and both will miss Saturday’s away match against the New York Red Bulls.

Sporting KC coach Peter Vermes said Davis suffered a concussion when he hit his head on the ground after a tumble during a scrimmage. With the head injury, he will be placed into the league’s concussion protocol system.

Mustivar tweaked a hamstring during a practice drill and will also remain in Kansas City rather than making the trip to New York.

Besler, who suffered a concussion March 24 while practicing with the U.S. men’s national team, did some light jogging during practice Thursday morning, but he has not yet passed concussion protocol and thus did not participate in contact drills.

Sporting KC is still without top backups Justin Mapp (toe) and Paulo Nagamura (calf).

Kevin Ellis is in line for his second straight start in place of Besler on the Sporting KC back line. Without Davis, the club could turn to Connor Hallisey, who started the first two matches of the season. Lawrence Olum or Jordi Quintilla figure to play defensive midfielder in Mustivar’s absence.
