Sporting KC's Graham Zusi joins U.S. national team, but Matt Besler returns home with concussion
For the first time in eight months, Sporting Kansas City winger Graham Zusi is back with the U.S. men's national team.
Zusi has been added to the U.S. roster for Tuesday's World Cup qualifier against Guatemala in Columbus.
But while he is a late arrival with the Americans, his MLS teammate is headed home early.
Sporting KC captain Matt Besler is returning to Kansas City after he suffered a concussion during national team training last week. The severity of the head injury has not yet been determined. He was held out of Friday's 2-0 loss in Guatemala after the injury occurred Thursday.
The U.S. will play Guatemala at 6 p.m. Tuesday at MAPFRE Stadium in Columbus.
Zusi has made 32 career appearances for the Americans but none since the Gold Cup last summer.
After Friday's loss, the U.S. is in need of a result Tuesday. It sits in third place in the CONCACAF Group C semifinal round of World Cup qualifying, with three matches remaining. The top two teams advance to the final qualifying round.
