Sporting Kansas City waived Amobi Okugo on Tuesday, less than a year after trading for the defensive midfielder.

Okugo, 24, was not invited back for the second wave of the team’s preseason camp in Tucson, Ariz. He made only three MLS appearances after joining the club last July.

The move lowers Sporting Kansas City’s roster to 26 players as it moves within two weeks of its season opener. It travels to Seattle on March 6. The roster limit is 28 players.

Sporting KC faces Colorado at 9 p.m. Wednesday in the Desert Diamond Cup preseason tournament. A live stream of the match will be available on the team’s website.
