Sporting KC opts to relinquish pick in dispersal draft of former Chivas USA roster
Sporting Kansas City passed on an opportunity Wednesday to add to its roster via the MLS Dispersal Draft, a distribution of former Chivas USA players.
Sporting KC held the third pick in the draft but opted not to select any of the available players. FC Dallas took goalkeeper Dan Kennedy with the first pick, and New York City FC followed with midfielder Matthew Dunn.
Chivas USA ceased operations late last month, and the league simultaneously announced plans for a new Los Angeles club.
Seven of the team’s former players were selected in Wednesday’s dispersal draft. D.C. United chose midfielder Thomas McNamara with the fourth pick; Montreal Impact selected Donny Toia sixth; Colorado opted for Caleb Calvert at No. 8; San Jose picked Kristopher Tyrpak ninth; and Toronto FC chose Marco Delgado 14th.
All seven players had their 2015 contracts — and subsequent options — automatically picked up, per league rules.
The players who weren’t selected will take part in the MLS Re-Entry Draft.
