Matt Besler rejoins Sporting KC ahead of Wednesday’s match in Portland

Matt Besler’s return to the U.S. men’s national team lasted only one match.

Besler has rejoined Sporting Kansas City ahead of the club’s game Wednesday in Portland, rather than sticking with the national team for its international friendly against Brazil on Tuesday.

U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann indicated the move was made to appease Sporting KC, which was faced with a shorthanded roster Wednesday.

“We were impressed with Matt Besler this past week,”” Klinsmann said in a statement Sunday. “We definitely saw what we needed to see from him ... and Sporting KC badly wanted him back for Wednesday, so we agreed to send him home.”

Besler played 28 minutes during the Americans’ 2-1 victory against Peru on Friday. The U.S. will play Mexico on Oct. 10 in a match that will determine a berth in the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup in Russia.

Aside from Besler, Sporting KC has only one center back (Kevin Ellis) who is deemed fully healthy for Wednesday’s match.

Besler, 28, has played every minute of the previous 27 Sporting KC matches across all competitions, and he leads a back line that has allowed the fewest shots in the league. He’s also second in the league with 172 clearances this season.
