Vermes says Sporting KC closer to contract agreement with Chance Myers

Sporting Kansas City may soon have a contract resolution with defender Chance Myers, manager Peter Vermes said Tuesday.

Vermes said recent talks have progressed with Myers, who remains without a contract for the 2014 season.

“I think we’re getting closer,” Vermes said. “I think that’s in a positive way. Hopefully we’ll know something here today or tomorrow.”

Myers has been absent from the team’s annual training trip to Tucson, Ariz.

Sporting KC defeated FC Tucson 1-0 in its first exhibition game Tuesday. C.J. Sapong scored the lone goal.

Myers’ contract situation is one of the few looming questions for a team that will otherwise largely resemble its 2013 version, which won the MLS Cup. Myers has played all six years of his MLS career with the Sporting KC franchise, starting 78 games over the past three seasons.

He trained with the United States men’s national team earlier this month.
