Sporting Kansas City’s offseason has gotten off to a slow start.

The Major League Soccer club has made just two player acquisitions and is yet to hire a new head coach. Thursday’s MLS SuperDraft delivered fans some action. Sporting KC held four picks total, including the fourth overall selection.

And with that fourth-overall pick, Sporting KC selected Kwaku Agyabeng, a midfielder from Clemson.

Agyabeng was signed to a Generation Adidas contract ahead of the draft, which means he does not count against Sporting KC’s senior roster. Nor will his contract count against the MLS salary cap as he earns a salary above the league minimum.

Here’s a recap of Thursday’s haul for Sporting KC:

At No. 4 overall, Kwaku Agyabeng

Agyabeng spent just one year at Clemson. But what a season it was.

Originally from Kumasi, Ghana, Agyabeng attended high school at St. Benedict’s Prep in Newark, New Jersey, winning two national prep championships.

He’s a left-footed defensive midfielder who stands 5-foot-8. He plays everywhere on the field and appears very comfortable on the ball, both dribbling and passing.

Some had regarded him as the biggest talent among this year’s draft-eligible players.

SKC’s next pick: A trade first

After making the No. 4 overall pick, Sporting KC traded back into the first round, sending $50,000 in General Allocation Money (GAM) and the 44th pick to the Colorado Rapids in exchange for the No. 19 selection. Sporting KC then used that pick to take Nikos Clarke-Tosczak from the University of Portland. Clarke-Tosczak is from Edmonton, Alberta in Canada and played in the Vancouver Whitecaps’ youth system. He also had a stint with FC Lugano’s U-17 team in Switzerland.

Clarke-Toszak is another left-footed player who can play as a center-back or left-back. He spent two years at Rhode Island before shifting to Portland for the 2025 season. He had four assists in 19 games for the Pilots in his junior year.

Sporting KC takes a Terp

With the 34th pick in the draft, Sporting KC selected Sadam Masereka, a forward from the University of Maryland.

Masereka spent two years at Lindsey Wilson University in Kentucky, scoring 22 goals in 35 games at the NAIA level. He transferred to Maryland in 2024 and scored 13 goals with seven assists in 39 games. He was a first-team All-Big Ten selection with the Terrapins.

Last but not least for Sporting KC

Sporting KC used its final selection, No. 64, on Cal Baptist forward Blake D’Agostino.

A sophomore, he scored 10 goals this past season, doubling his total from his freshman year.

Local connection: Cooper Forcelini drafted, too

Cooper Forcelini of Olathe was drafted 43rd overall by St. Louis City on Thursday.

A midfielder, Forcelini made nearly 50 appearances for Xavier. He played high school soccer and basketball at Blue Valley West.
