Two days before the MLS summer transfer window closes, Sporting Kansas City is on the verge of making its first international midseason acquisition this year.

The club has reached an agreement in principle with 21-year-old Spanish midfielder Jordi Quintilla, and the deal should be finalized soon, pending the completion of paperwork, Sporting coach Peter Vermes told The Star after training Tuesday.

“It’s 95 percent done,” Vermes said. “We’re just waiting on one document.”

Quintilla is out of contract, which will prevent Sporting KC from paying a transfer fee to acquire him. Vermes said the proposed agreement is a multi-year deal.

Quintilla is a Barcelona academy product before he joined the club’s reserve team, and he was teammates with Uri Rosell, the former Sporting KC midfielder. He most recently played for French club AC Ajaccio in a midfield role that most closely translates to the position Roger Espinoza plays with Sporting KC.

Earlier this summer, Quintilla briefly trained with Sporting KC.

Asked if Quintilla could contribute as soon as this season, Vermes said, “That really remains to be seen. It’s really going to be about where his fitness is when he comes back. We’ve been told he’s training and working out, but I’ll believe that when I see him and I get to evaluate him myself.”

The secondary transfer window closes Thursday, which also marks the league’s 2015 trade deadline.
