Sporting KC has its first game with replaced field
Sporting Park played host to its first match on Saturday since Sporting Kansas City opted to replace its home field earlier this week.
It offered mixed reviews. At best.
The previously-existing divots were absent Saturday, when Sporting KC and Houston played to a 1-1 tie, but the field required sand to fill in the gaps between the newly-laid seams.
“It wasn’t playing very well,” Sporting midfielder Benny Feilhaber said. “It was definitely not easy to play on.”
Sporting KC coach Peter Vermes said he expects the field to be in better shape before the team returns home for the U.S. Open Cup semifinals against Real Salt Lake on Aug. 12.
▪ Sporting KC forward Dom Dwyer received a yellow card in the first half on Saturday. As a result, he will miss the club’s match next Saturday in Toronto due to yellow card accumulation.
▪ Chance Myers and Roger Espinoza each made their 150th career appearance with Sporting KC, a total that includes all competitions.
