Sporting Kansas City fans who’ve been eagerly awaiting the unveiling of the club’s new alternate jerseys for the 2022 season got what they’ve been asking for on Friday.

The team unveiled its secondary kit — which will actually be worn through the 2022 and 2023 Major League Soccer seasons — and announced that it’s taking pre-orders for the new blue game-shirts emblazoned with the new “Compass Minerals” sponsorship logo

In a news release Friday afternoon, the team wrote, “Fans can place pre-orders online at MLSstore.com, or sign up to be notified by SportingStyle — and receive free jersey customization — when the new secondary kit is in stock at Children’s Mercy Park.”

The new jersey is fashioned in the club’s familiar “Dark Indigo” color scheme and pays homage to Sporting KC’s positioning near the state line between Kansas and Missouri. The jersey includes subtly embossed “913” and “816” marks — the area codes for the Kansas City portions of Kansas and Missouri. The area codes are seen “emanating from the state line that anchors the club’s crest.”

The state line became a point of emphasis amid the club’s re-brand of 2010 and has appeared on its kits since 2011. This year’s scheme brings back the look of the team’s first secondary jersey.

Among other design features of the new jerseys are two state-line elements above the player’s name and uniform number: a shuttlecock in “tribute to the iconic sculptures at the world-famous Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art,” and a depiction of the Rosedale Memorial Arch, which “commemorates local citizens who served in World War I, World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War.”

The “necktape” on the inside of the kits is accentuated with the 913 and 816 area codes and the words “Two states. One City. One Club.”

Sporting KC plans to host a “State Line Block Party” on Sunday, Feb. 27, the day of the team’s season opener in Georgia against Atlanta United FC. Attendance is free, but fans must procure advance tickets through SeatGeek in order to be admitted.
