Sporting Kansas City’s Gadi Kinda called up for two matches with Israeli national team

Still seeking his first senior international cap for Israel, Sporting Kansas City midfielder Gadi Kinda might finally earn one this weekend: He was called up to the Israeli national team Tuesday for two upcoming friendlies.

The 27-year-old who scored in Sporting’s 3-2 win over the Houston Dynamo last weekend was selected by coach Willibald Ruttensteiner to join Israel’s squad for matches Saturday at Montenegro and June 9 at Portugal. Both kick off at 1:45 p.m. Central time.

The Ethiopia-born Kinda has earned selections to the Israel senior team before — his last appearance came in 2019 for UEFA Euro 2020 qualifying — but has never played in a senior match for the nation in which he and his family have lived since he was a child. He’s highly experienced at Israel’s youth levels, however, having a combined 29 appearances for the under-18, -19 and -21 sides.

Kinda’s selection means he may gain some extra match fitness away from Kansas City as Sporting has a two-week break between last Saturday’s win against the Dynamo and its next match, June 12 against Austin FC at Children’s Mercy Park.

Israel is not one of the 24 teams qualified for Euro 2020, which begins later this month.

Kinda has nine goals in 30 total appearances for Sporting, counting his loan deal from Israeli club Beitar Jerusalem last season and when the deal was made permanent for this year. He has three goals and one assist this year for Kansas City, which currently sits second in the Western Conference standings.
