Postponed Sporting KC-Colorado match rescheduled for Oct. 21
Three days after inclement weather forced the first soccer postponement in Sporting Park history, Sporting Kansas City and Colorado have settled on a makeup date: Oct. 21.
The two teams were scheduled to meet Saturday for the first of three meetings this season, but the match was suspended after the two teams cycled through their warmup routines. Following an 80-minute delay that included lightning and heavy rain, the match was postponed.
“It’s never happened to me before, and I’ve played in some pretty gnarly conditions growing up around here,” Sporting KC captain Matt Besler said. “I’ve never had a game completely canceled. It was weird. You wake up Sunday morning, and with your body clock, it felt like you played a game. Mentally, we had all prepared for a game, and we were ready to go.”
The postponement came at a bit of an opportune time for Sporting KC, which announced a starting lineup Saturday without four of its regulars — winger Graham Zusi (concussion), midfielder Roger Espinoza (groin strain), defender Marcel de Jong (hip strain) and defender Seth Sinovic (illness).
Because the match had not started, all four will be available to play in the makeup game, even though they were listed as unavailable Saturday.
All tickets purchased for Saturday’s postponement will be valid for the Oct. 21 game, which will start at 7:30 p.m.
With the rescheduled date, Colorado’s first match at Sporting Park this season will be June 27. Sporting KC will travel to Colorado on Aug. 29.
The club is scheduled to travel to San Jose on Oct. 16. It will close out the regular season on Oct. 25 against the LA Galaxy
