Sporting KC winger Gerso Fernandes suspended for Saturday's match

When Sporting Kansas City takes the field Saturday for the first time since trading striker Dom Dwyer, it will also be without another one of its offensive weapons.

Leading scorer Gerso Fernandes received a one-game suspension from the MLS Disciplinary Committee on Wednesday, the result of a “serious foul” in last weekend’s match with Real Salt Lake.

Fernandes, who has a team-best six goals this season, will serve the one-game ban Saturday, when Sporting KC plays host to the Chicago Fire at 7 p.m. at Children’s Mercy Park.

Fernandes caught Real Salt Lake’s Luke Mulholland in the shin with his spikes in the 76th minute of Saturday’s draw. The committee’s ruling implies it believes Fernandes should have received a red card for the foul.
