Sporting Kansas City loaned homegrown goalkeeper Jon Kempin to the San Antonio Scorpions of the North American Soccer League, the club announced Friday.

Kempin, 21, is considered the club’s goalkeeper of the future, but he opened the season third on the depth chart. The move to San Antonio should offer a path to more playing time. The Scorpions won the NASL championship in 2014.

Kempin made his MLS debut last season and recorded five appearances across all competitions for Sporting KC. He spent time with the U.S. men’s national team earlier this year.
