Sporting KC striker Dom Dwyer undergoes surgery on his right ankle
Sporting Kansas City striker Dom Dwyer opened the offseason with an operation.
A week after his club was eliminated from the Western Conference playoffs, Dwyer underwent arthroscopic surgery Wednesday to clean up bone spurs in his right ankle. The surgery was considered minor, and Dwyer is expected to be fully healthy before for preseason camp in late January.
On his Instagram account, Dwyer said, “Time to rest up and come back a better player.
“I want to win trophies. I want to score goals. Gutted to finish the season how we did but looking forward to spending some time off with family and friends.”
Sporting KC was eliminated from the playoffs with a 1-0 loss to Seattle in the knockout round last week.
Dwyer, who is left-foot dominant, led the team in scoring for the third consecutive season, reaching a career high with 2,823 minutes played in MLS competitions across 33 games, 31 of them starts.
He showed few signs of an injury affecting his play. Dwyer scored 16 goals this season, despite no longer taking the club’s penalty kicks. All 16 goals came through play. In his record-breaking season in 2014, Dwyer scored 22 goals, but only 15 of them came through play. Seven were from the penalty dot.
He also had a career-best three assists in 2016.
Over the past three seasons, Dwyer has scored 50 goals in MLS play, the second most in the league during that span to New York Red Bulls striker Bradley Wright-Phillips, who has 68.
