Amy Rodriguez leads FC Kansas City to third victory in four games

In a Mother’s Day match it only makes sense that FC Kansas City’s resident mom Amy Rodriguez would lead the team to victory.

Rodriguez, who missed last season to have her son, scored her fifth and sixth goals of the year as FC Kansas City defeated the Washington Spirit 2-1 on Sunday night in front of 1,797 fans at UMKC’s Durwood Stadium.

The Blues have won three of their last four and evened their record at 3-3-1. They also avenged a 3-1 loss to the Spirit from April 19.

“In the beginning of the year I was scoring but we weren’t winning so for me to get the goals and to get the win is just icing on the cake,” Rodriguez said. “I couldn’t be more happy to beat the Spirit, too, since we lost the last game.”

Rodriguez scored her first goal in the 36th minute off an assist from Jen Buczkowski. The Blues held that lead until the 63rd minute when Washington’s Danesha Adams knocked in an equalizer, but Rodriguez was ready with the answer.

Less than a minute later, she put the Blues back on top with an assist from fellow U.S. women’s national team member Lauren Holiday.

“I could not be prouder than the moment they scored that second goal,” coach Vlatko Andonovski said. “They responded so quick that they surprised me as well. I didn’t think they could bounce back as quick but it was well played.”

The second goal moved Rodriguez into sole possession of first place in the National Women’s Soccer League for scoring. She had four shots in the game with three on goal.

“I said that she is going to score goals and that she is going to be dangerous and she proves that every game,” Andonovski said. “She is a world-class forward and if you give her a little bit of space she will put it on frame and put it in the net.”

The Blues had nine shots with four on goal while limiting the Spirit to just four shots, all of which were on goal.
