FC Kansas City acquires national team member Heather O’Reilly in trade

The reigning National Women’s Soccer League champions announced a trade on Monday that will bring yet another national team member to Kansas City.

FC Kansas City will acquire three-time Olympic gold medalist Heather O’Reilly from the Boston Breakers in exchange for second-year players Morgan Marlborough and Kassey Kallman.

“Making changes to a championship team is not easy, but we can’t stand pat and we must always try and improve,” FCKC director of soccer operations Huw Williams said. “Heather O’Reilly improves every team in this league, and we are very happy she is now on our team.”

O’Reilly, a 29-year-old midfielder, most recently helped the national team win the 2014 CONCACAF Women’s Championship to qualify for the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup. She has played with the national team since 2002 and scored 36 goals at the international level. New Blues teammates Lauren Holiday, Becky Sauerbrunn and Amy Rodriguez are also on the team.

Last season in the NWSL, O’Reilly led the Breakers with nine goals and five assists in 22 games.

Marlborough played nine games for the Blues and registered two goals. Kallman started 18 games and recorded one assist.
