Current aims to expand CPKC Stadium with potential $235 million in new tax district
The Kansas City Current promised it would expand CPKC Stadium after it opened two years ago. The time for that expansion is here.
In an ordinance set for Thursday’s city council agenda, the women’s soccer club could receive up to $235 million in bonds in the creation of a new Tax Increment Financing (TIF) district facilitated by the city to help continue its transformation of Berkley Riverfront.
The project includes expanding CPKC Stadium, Current Landing (which is the entire district around the stadium), and the construction of a parking garage.
Expanding the stadium would increase the capacity from 11,500 to 18,000, officials previously told The Star. The estimated cost of the project is currently at $1.4 billion, which includes the finished construction of Current Landing.
The ordinance would direct city manager Mario Vasquez to negotiate “financial and tax incentives through state agencies and negotiate intergovernmental cooperative agreements with the State of Missouri and related entities,” according to the ordinance.
If the ordinance is approved, the city plans to apply for some funding through the Missouri Development Finance Board tax credits and the Missouri Downtown Economic Stimulus Act.
The ordinance could be voted on Thursday, but it also could be tabled and sent to a committee where Current personnel will lay out their plans for city officials.
The Current previously used $5.5 million from the MDFB in 2022 to help improve the infrastructure to form CPKC Stadium.
The team has already spent more than $200 million on the construction of its training facilities and home stadium with minimal public funding, setting historic landmarks for women’s soccer across the world. The investment has helped the Current host championships and matches across several different sports.
The Current’s training facility is also currently hosting the Netherlands for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
“The Kansas City Current is proud to continue investing in the future of Kansas City and the continued growth of the riverfront,” the club told The Star in a statement.
“To date, we have made a generational investment in our city — investing over $350mm in Kansas City’s riverfront through our investments in CPKC Stadium and Current Landing. CPKC Stadium has set the standard for global women’s sports and Current Landing is building a new neighborhood on our riverfront. Current Landing is one of the most ambitious mixed-use projects in the United States — transformational for our city, women’s sports and the broader downtown community.
“As we look ahead, we are committed to raising the bar for women’s sports again. We appreciate the collaboration and leadership from community and civic partners and look forward to sharing more details as conversations with our civic partners continue.”
