Michelle Cooper and Mary Long score as KC Current claims Teal Rising Cup title
The Kansas City Current defeated SC Corinthians 2-1 Tuesday night to win the inaugural Teal Rising Cup title at CPKC Stadium.
The Current’s goals came in the first half, scored by Michelle Cooper and Mary Long. Long’s goal, assisted by Cooper, was the first of her professional career.
The Teal Rising Cup featured two days of doubleheaders on Saturday and Tuesday. Corinthians and the Current earned spots in the championship match with 1-0 and 3-0 wins, respectively, on Saturday.
The Chicago Stars lost the third-place match 1-0 to Palmeiras earlier Tuesday evening.
Regular-season NWSL play resumes Aug. 1. The league has been on a break since June 23 to accommodate international tournaments, including the UEFA Women’s Euro and Copa América Femenina.
Heading into the break, Kansas City (11-2) topped the standings with 33 points.
