Kansas City Current sign midfielder, announce 2-year extension for left back Rodriguez
It’s been a busy week for the Kansas City Current.
The National Women’s Soccer League team that opens play in a brand-new stadium in just a few months signed midfielder Claire Hutton to a U-18 initiative contract on Thursday.
Hutton, who turns 18 in January, captained the U.S. Women’s Youth National Team to a bronze medal at the recent Pan Am games.
“The potential that Claire has is incredible,” said KC Current coach Vlatko Andonovski. “She is an amazing talent with international experience and someone that can be a great asset to the future of this club.”
A native of Bethlehem, New York, Hutton indeed arrives with great promise. She was dominant with her Bethlehem Central High School girls soccer team, scoring 59 goals and winning two state titles in her first two years — so dominant, in fact, that she joined the Bethlehem Central boys varsity team as a junior.
Hutton then went on to score six goals for the U.S. Women’s Youth National Team in the U-17 CONCACAF Championship.
She was committed to playing college soccer at North Carolina before choosing to go pro and signing with the Current.
“I cannot imagine a better club and city to play for as a professional than the Kansas City Current, Hutton said in a news release shared by the Current. “I am humbled by this opportunity and look forward to playing for Vlatko and the other coaching staff and competing alongside my new teammates.”
The Current also announced a two-year contract extension with Izzy Rodriguez this week. She scored three goals and recorded two assists this year as she locked down the left-back spot in KC’s back four.
“I’m extremely excited and grateful to be staying with the Current and getting to play for this club and this city once again,” Rodriguez said. “I can’t wait to get back to work with the group and compete for a championship.”
